are associated with declines in SOC concentrations, and that increased residue inputs from high nitrogen applications do not mitigate this decline as much as we might hope. It is not possible, however, to link the over-application of nitrogen fertilizers to the decline in SOC. It would be appropriate for the authors to restate their conclusions to refl ect a more measured assessment of the evidence provided.

The myth of nitrogen fertilization for soil carbon sequestration.
Intensive use of N fertilizers in modern agriculture is motivated by the economic value of high grain yields and is generally perceived to sequester soil organic C by increasing the input of crop residues. This perception is at odds with a century of soil organic C data reported herein for the Morrow Plots, the world's oldest experimental site under continuous corn (Zea mays L.). After 40 to 50...
متن کاملLong-term effects of clipping and nitrogen management in turfgrass on soil organic carbon and nitrogen dynamics: the CENTURY model simulation.
Experiments to document the long-term effects of clipping management on N requirements, soil organic carbon (SOC), and soil organic nitrogen (SON) are difficult and costly and therefore few. The CENTURY ecosystem model offers an opportunity to study long-term effects of turfgrass clipping management on biomass production, N requirements, SOC and SON, and N leaching through computer simulation. ...
متن کاملEffects of Sandy Desertified Land Reclamation on Soil Carbon Sequestration (Key Study: Kerman province)
Desertification leads to decrease in the ecosystem C pool and attendant reduction in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC). Reclamation of sandy land in arid and semi-arid has a high potential to increase carbon sequestration and improving soil quality. Our objective as to examine the changes in the soil carbon sequestration and soil properties of two soil layers (0–20 and 20-50 cm) under two types of recl...
متن کاملReply to Comments on “Synthetic Nitrogen Fertilizers Deplete Soil Nitrogen: A Global Dilemma for Sustainable Cereal Production,” by R.L. Mulvaney,
We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the comments of Dr. Powlson and his colleagues (Powlson et al., 2010) and to further elaborate a critical but often overlooked aspect of synthetic N fertilizer usage in response to the world’s growing demands for food, fi ber, and energy. Th e work reported by Khan et al. (2007a) and Mulvaney et al. (2009) was undertaken to evaluate how synthetic N fe...
متن کاملComparison of Carbon and Nitrogen Sequestration in Soils Under Plantations, Natural Forest and Agricultural Farm Land Uses in Arjan Plain in the Fars Province
The carbon sequestaration by plants and soil is one of the easiest and the most econimical ways to reduce atmosphere carbon. This study was conducted on the planted land use of Fraxinus rotundifolia, Cupressus arizonica, obinia pseudoacacia L., Elaeagnus angustifolia, Cedrus libani, and Quercus brantii (persica) in the Arjan plain of Fars province. For each plantation land use, there were three...
